The “Michel de Montaigne” Foundation, Tony Bareham (University of Ulster) and a group of academics from the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics of Pisa University are pleased to announce an International Conference to be held in September 2017. The event, the twelfth conference of this kind hosted by the Foundation since 2008, will be organised with the collaboration of the Bagni di Lucca Municipality and the “Istituto Storico Lucchese”.
Introduced by a line from “The Garden”, one of Andrew Marvell’s famous poems, the conference topic deals with “The Literary Imaginary and the Environment”, a wide field of study which can be approached both in light of contemporary issues and phenomenologies and as a paradigm for the investigation of perspectives and contexts relating to the past. The word “environment” is meant as a natural(istic) space – such as geographical areas, landscapes, views, sites, and a geological or geophysical habitat – which enters into a dynamic relation with the anthropic dimension. This interaction may work towards the thriving and conservation of a given biological environment, or implode and dismantle the harmonic, balanced proportions of a whole ecosystem, especially when a violent and prolonged attack on its structural order and living organisms is delivered. The conference’s objective is to provide a platform for discussing how the literary discourse is – and has been – deeply concerned with this crucial kind of coexistence: a “life in common” which literature reads and interprets through its own imaginary and epistemic codes.
We welcome contributions on British, Anglophone or Italian literature, focusing on aspects connected with the following themes and theoretical/ methodological areas:

  • A “green thought”: the authorial and collective imaginary’s backgrounds, literary cartographies, representations of physical or fantastic geographies which evoke and recreate the natural scenery in written or multimedial texts
  • The environmental imaginary: Nature and Art, the expressions and evolutions of landscape architecture and garden design, the value of parks and ornamental plants
  • Botany and literature: taxonomies, nomenclatures, the symbolic, mythical and alchemic qualities of plants, flowers, herbs, and fruit
  • “Special” places, e.g. the pleasure garden, the hortus conclusus, the botanic garden, the hedge maze, the vertical garden, the “garden of ideas”, the country retreat, the farm, the greenhouse, the arboretum, the orangery
  • Myths and narratives which give voice to an ecological conscience: the idea of a correct relationship with the territory; fragile environments, borderlands, “edgelands” and “interzones”; the agrarian dream and a return to horticulture; the protection of biodiversity; apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic stories of environmental disasters and global catastrophes
  • Greening the Humanities: the “green philosophy”, environmental policies and their influences on literature; the perspectives of Ecocriticism and Geocriticism, Green Cultural Studies and Environmental Literary Studies; the concepts of shallow, social, and deep ecology, of land ethic, ecocentrism and ecoradicalism; the postcolonial turn and the end of the old Empire’s control and exploitation of foreign territories vs. the present-day risk of an “ecological imperialism” still exercised by Western powers
  • A “green shade” for posterity: stories of rebirth and reconciliation between Man and Nature; a post-global Paradise Regained; the myth of Mother Earth, Ecofeminism and the hypothesis of a non-anthropocentric Humanism; Gaia Theory, Geopoetics, Spiritual Ecology.
